Electrolux Group continues to focus on sustainability through research into innovative solutions that promote environmental protection. These include hydrogen as an energy source to make cooking appliances greener. A project launched in central Italy demonstrates this.
Italian experimentation on the use of hydrogen in the home
The Electrolux Group’s commitment to supporting consumers in adopting a more environmentally friendly lifestyle consists not only in the development of high-efficiency appliances, but also in the exploration of alternative energy sources. In Italy, in particular, the Group has been working on the possibility of using hydrogen in cooking appliances.
It is in this context that the Electrolux Group is participating in the first Italian experimentation on the use of hydrogen in the home. This has been promoted by Inrete Distribuzione Energia (Hera Group) in the municipality of Castelfranco Emilia (in the province of Modena).
Since 2022, the project has seen the gradual introduction of mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen into the domestic network up to 5%, with the possibility of reaching 10% as established by the protocol signed between the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica-MASE), Inrete, and the Italian Gas Committee (CIG- Comitato Italiano Gas). “Internal and field tests – explains the Electrolux Group – have confirmed the excellent performance of our hobs even with these new mixtures”.
Hydrogen Ready 20% hobs
The Electrolux Group’s Food Preparation R&D center in Forlì has been working for years on integrating hydrogen into cooking systems. The result is a range of products already ready to operate with mixtures of up to 20% hydrogen, anticipating regulatory and infrastructural developments in Italy and Europe.
“Our goal of contributing to a better lifestyle is also achieved through our participation in these projects – says Fabio Spanò, Combustion Technology Module Manager EU at Electrolux Group – which allow us to share knowledge and expertise, putting them at the service of well-being and common development”.
The advantages of green hydrogen
Green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis of water powered by renewable sources, is a form of clean energy and therefore guarantees greater sustainability. Its combustion does not produce CO₂, but only water vapor, representing a concrete solution for the decarbonization of domestic consumption.
With this initiative, thus, the Electrolux Group confirms its commitment to making the energy transition a reality, actively contributing to building a cleaner and more responsible future. The company has long been active on various fronts to achieve significant sustainability goals. From water and energy-saving technologies to recycled materials and the fight against microplastics and food waste, the Electrolux Group is working in a number of areas to offer consumers sustainable solutions.
