Operational guidelines for marketplaces compliance with Directive 166/2024 on extended producer responsibility
With the entry into force of Directive No. 166 of November 2024, it will be necessary for all e-commerce platforms operating in product supply chains where EPR obligations or “extended producer responsibility” apply, including WEEE and batteries, to comply with the requirements set out in order to facilitate the declaration process and simplify the administrative procedures to which online sellers are subjected.
A Strategic role for marketplaces in shaping sustainable compliance
Precisely in order not to fail to comply with the obligations set forth by the current directive, the ECOEM Consortium has implemented a specific solution for marketplaces that host third-party sellers operating in the technological product supply chains and therefore falling within the scope of WEEE and batteries.
«The directive is the result of a previous study carried out on the need to detect the thousands of companies that are configured as exporters of products in our country. Online sellers in fact represent a focal point on the quantities of goods that are directly destined to final consumers without going through a National distributor and therefore without adequate management of EPR environmental obligations» comments Luca Fasolino, General Manager of the ECOEM Consortium.
«In this context, marketplaces are configured as a relevant entity, being able to take care of the bureaucratic formalities on behalf of sellers, simplifying the declaration system and allowing sellers to actively participate in financing for the management of the end of life of their products» ends Fasolino.
