Its name is J-Project and it is a fully customizable open source hood. This new product, designed by Faber, in addition to the typical hood functions, allows to control domestic pollution and the carbon monoxide levels in the home. Besides, it allows to adjust the humidity and read the news on the Internet or watch a video-recipe. The customization possibilities are virtually endless. J-Project has been conceived by six Italian engineers and has been recently presented at Maker Fair (Rome), an event dedicated to the innovation. “In recent years we have heard a lot about Internet of Things and robotics, for all that concerns the sector of Tlc or industrial automation – said Luca Colciago, R&D Director Business Unit Hoods Faber -. With J-Project the concept of IoT also enters the world of the cooker hoods. Faber, pioneer brand, has developed it using a team of 6 young engineers who want to create something truly innovative and futuristic, combining open source software, smart technologies, robotics and an important know-how”. The project, currently under development and not yet in production, has been conceived at Faber Tech, a laboratory of ideas born from the meeting of 6 young engineers: Alessandro Donnino (team leader), Chiara Mariani, Simone Celli, David Caracini, Enrico Erba and Michele Conti. J-Project is a vertical hood that, thanks to the new Nautilus fan unit with very small sizes, reaches high performances in energy saving. The hardware architecture (the heart of the hood) is fully integrated with the Arduino platform, so it is totally open source. The hood incorporates a SCK (Smart Citizen Kit) module, equipped with various sensors, such as temperature, humidity, light, sound, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and the available wi-fi networks. J-Project has a large display, placed in the glass front panel, able to display not only the information collected by the sensors, but also tweets, news and images from external devices. Besides, the Faber engineers have developed the Software Development Kit (SDK), thanks to which the user community can make any changes, to meet every need.
