As reported by GfK Temax, the TCG market in the United Kingdom grew by 4.4% in Q3 2016, compared to the third quarter of 2015. The major domestic appliances and telecommunications sectors registered double-digit growth: up by 12.3% and 11.1%, respectively.

Major domestic appliances
Growth of 12.3 percent was reported in the MDA sector in Q3 2016. Strong results were seen in all of the key product categories, compared to Q3 2015. In the tumble dryers segment (up by 35.4 percent), value was driven by condenser/heat pump products. This performance was indicative of consumers’ green buying choices. Sales of refrigeration products grew, particularly those products with a large capacity. Also, side-by-side models sold particularly well.

Small domestic appliances
The SDA sector registered a small rise in Q3 2016 – up by 1.1 percent, compared to 2015’s Q3. Sales of personal care products helped to drive growth in the sector. The vacuum cleaners segment was boosted by the rise in popularity of handstick models.

Consumer electronics
In Q3 2016, the UK’s CE sector declined by 5.3 percent, compared to the same quarter in 2015. A positive performance was registered in the audio products segment, driven by the growth of wireless technology. A 5.1 percent fall in sales of the sector’s largest category – panel TVs – contributed to the decline of the whole CE market.

Photography
There was very little movement in this sector in Q3 2016 with a fall of just 0.5 percent, compared to 2015’s Q3. Healthy demand for accessories and lenses was noted, driven by the popularity of high-end cameras. However, sales of digital cameras were down as basic “point-and-shoot” models were usurped by the technology available in smartphones.

Information technology
In a very flat quarter, the IT sector rose by just 0.5 percent, compared to Q3 2015. The mediatablets segment declined (down by 8 percent) due to market saturation. There was strong growth in some of the smaller segments – keying devices, pointing devices, and webcams – up by 28.6 percent, 29 percent and 55.5 percent, respectively.

Telecommunications
The UK’s telecommunications sector registered healthy growth in the third quarter of 2016 – up by 11.1 percent, compared to 2015’s Q3. The smartphones segment benefited from recent model launches and rose by 10.6 percent. The core wearables segment, with relatively low penetration, continued to increase in popularity (up by 83.5 percent).

Office equipment and consumables
In the OE sector, both key high-volume product categories – laser and inkjet cartridges – suffered declines in Q3 2016. In a very stable quarter, there were mixed results in the office machines segment – some rose and some declined. Overall, the OE sector declined by 1.5 percent, compared to Q3 2015.
