As reported by GfK Temax, the Russian technical consumer goods market rose by 8.4% in Q3 2016, compared to the same quarter in 2015. Major and small domestic appliances increased by 6.4% and 7.9% respectively.

Major domestic appliances
The MDA sector grew by 6.4% in Q3 2016, compared to the same quarter in 2015. All 3 months in Q3 saw growth (in value terms), but only September registered an increase in unit sales. There were moderate increases in prices – up by 1.5%, compared to Q3 2015. Traditionally, the third quarter is the season for purchasing free-standing products. Growth here exceeded that for built-in products.

Small domestic appliances
In the third quarter of 2016, Russia’s SDA market grew by 7.9%, compared to Q3 2015. In some distribution channels, sales of vacuum cleaners registered positive results (in terms of unit growth). Also, consumers preferred shopping for kitchen appliances and personal care products in larger stores which have a wider choice, a better assortment, and personal customer service.

Consumer electronics
In Q3 2016, Russia’s CE market fell by 2%, compared to the same period in 2015. Demand for panel TVs – the sector’s largest segment – declined by 0.7%. The audio product categories continued to perform solidly as more consumers shifted their demand from traditional hi-fi and home theater systems to wireless and smartphone-connected solutions.

Photography
Russia’s photography sector was down in Q3 2016 – by 32.5% in terms of value, and by 51% in units. Large sensor cameras segment value is going down only by 9% while other segments registered deeper negative trends. The turnover in the full-frame cameras segment declined by 29%, while other single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras fell by 40%.

Information technology
The Russian information technology market stagnated in Q3 2016 as a number of factors – increasing prices and declining unit sales – balanced each other. Sales of mediatablets (down by over 20%, compared to Q3 2015) remained the biggest factor in the sector’s fall. This eliminated the positive changes seen in sales of other IT products.

Telecommunications
In Q3 2016, the telecommunications market grew by 28%, compared to 2015’s third quarter. As the smartphones market reaches maturity, both retailers and vendors started to diversify their range of mobile accessories products. This has been a noticeable pattern in ‘non-telecom’ channels which have been expanding their market share in the smartphones market for some time.

Office equipment and consumables
Russia’s OE sector grew in Q3 2016 – up by 7.8%, compared to Q3 2015. The laser printers and inkjet devices segments both registered double digits growth, compared to the same period in 2015. The growing popularity of continuous ink supply systems (CISS) supported the positive trend.
