The dispersion of microplastics in washing machine waste water contributes to the pollution of the seas. This is why companies in the household appliances sector have taken action to study the problem in search of solutions. The commitment to sustainability and the fight against microfibre pollution sees Beko at the forefront. The company is not new to initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and supporting consumers in achieving more sustainable lifestyles.
Beko actively collaborates in scientific projects. At the conference “The effects of microplastics on the environment and human health”, the company presented its vision and solutions to combat microplastic pollution. Marevivo Foundation and the “Luigi Vanvitelli” University in Naples organised the event.
Environment and health: the technological challenge
During her speech entitled “Environment and health: the technological challenge”, Michela Lucchesini (Marketing Manager of Beko Italy) illustrated Beko’s approach to managing environmental emergencies. She focuses on marine pollution caused by microfibres, a danger to the ecosystem and human health.
Beko has responded to this challenge by launching FiberCatcher, a cutting-edge filtering system integrated into latest generation washing machines. The solution is capable of retaining more than 95% of the microfibres released by synthetic fabrics. This prevents their dispersion into the water and protects the food chain.
A joint effort
The conference “The effects of microplastics on the environment and human health” represents an important step in Beko‘s journey towards sustainability. The aim is to create a culture of collective responsibility, encouraging individuals and communities to embrace sustainable practices as a daily choice. “Sustainability for Beko is not just a buzzword, but a mission that guides our every action –Michela Lucchesini said –. We are convinced that taking care of the environment means taking care of people. Which is why we develop products that improve our customers’ lives and protect the Planet”.
Beko’s contribution is not limited to the production of eco-friendly household appliances. The company is active in awareness-raising campaigns and educational programmes, collaborating with institutions and partners who share the same vision. One example of this strategy is the partnership with Marevivo. It is an environmental foundation that has been dedicated to protecting the sea for over 40 years. Together with Beko, it is promoting initiatives to raise awareness of the urgency of an ecological transition, starting with the protection of the marine ecosystem.
This commitment is also strengthened by the research and experimentation project launched with the University of Marche – Department of Life and Environmental Sciences. The aim is to develop a methodological protocol to measure the effectiveness of FiberCatcher technology in preventing the ecotoxicological risks associated with the dispersion of microfibres, demonstrating the concrete value of Beko’s solutions for the environment.
Beko’s participation in the conference therefore represents a step forward in the construction of a more sustainable future, where synergy between companies, institutions and the academic world is fundamental.
