Although the technical consumer goods market in Taiwan registered a fall of 0.9% in overall generated revenue in the second quarter of 2015 compared to the same period of last year, two sectors – small domestic appliances and telecommunications – achieved a strong double-digit growth. Here are the data released by GfK Temax.

Small domestic appliances
All segments in the SDA sector – with the exception of electric thermos pots – reported growth. In particular, strong double-digit increases were generated in the air treatment products, hot beverage makers and dental care products segments – up by 49.5%, 16.3% and 10.4% respectively – compared to Q2 2014.

Major domestic appliances
In the second quarter of 2015, the MDA sector reported a small fall in sales (0.2%), compared to Q2 2014. The key growth segment was built-in hobs with a 39.3% increase in sales. Demands for all other segments (microwave ovens, washing machines and refrigerators) fell by 9%, 2.5% and 2.2% respectively, compared to the same period in 2014.

Telecommunications*
Demand for headsets and phablets fell in Q2 2015, compared to the same period last year. However, the performance of mobile handsets surged strongly (by 34%) to help the Tlc sector in Taiwan to achieve overall growth of 22.8%, compared to Q2 2014.
*In the telecommunications sector, phablets (smartphones with screen sizes larger than 5.5 inches) were not included in this report.

Information technology
The major segments in Taiwan’s IT market – mediatablets and desktop computing products – fell significantly in Q2 2015. The falls were in double-digit ranges: 31.6% and 17.5% respectively. These declines, along with the 4% fall in demand for mobile computing products (another key contributing segment) caused the IT sector to fall by 11.6%, compared to Q2 2014.

Photography
The photography sector garnered nearly NTD2.3 billion in Q2 2015, a substantial drop of 19.5% compared to Q2 2014. Demand for digital cameras continued its downtrend, -22.4% compared to the same period in 2014. Mirrorless cameras were also down by 1.5%.

Consumer electronics
Sales in the CE sector were down by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2015, compared to the same period in the previous year. This was due to a decline in the biggest segment – Panel TVs – which reported a 12.7% drop in sales value, compared to the same period in 2014. Except for video game consoles, camcorders and docking/mini-speakers, which grew by 59.4%, 20.9% and 16.9% respectively, demand for all other segments fell.
